Charleroi baseball team riddled with injuries
After going 8-8 and finishing fourth in its section a year ago, Charleroi was anxiously seeking a playoff berth this season.
Then the injury bug hit.
“As (actor) Leslie Nielsen once stated, ‘This hurts. Not like riding a bike without a seat, but hurts nonetheless,’” cited Cougars coach Brian Corrin.
Charleroi has been without top pitcher Martin Matyas (season-ending Tommy John elbow surgery), No. 2 pitcher Jared Sullenberger (knee) and starting shortstop Gunnar Riley (thumb).
The pitching losses, in particular, have played a major role in the team’s 0-6 start. The Cougars, who are 0-2 in Class AA Section 2, have given up at least nine runs in every game.
Riley, a sophomore, hit .451 (23 for 51) last season.
One of the healthy players is a good one. Senior catcher Brooks Watkins batted .510 (26 for 51) and drove in 25 runs a season ago, both team highs.
Watkins and his teammates hope to turn around their season, beginning this afternoon with a non-section contest at East Allegheny.
