Central Catholic baseball team to face defending WPIAL champion

Written by Brad Everett on .

The Central Catholic Vikings knocked off the No. 2 seed in the WPIAL quarterfinals.

Up next is the defending champion.

Central Catholic (17-4-1), the No. 10 seed, will try to punch its ticket to the championship and extract a little revenge when the Vikings face No. 3 Seneca Valley (16-4) in a Class AAAA semifinal game today at Upper St. Clair at 5 p.m.

A season ago, Seneca Valley defeated Central Catholic, 7-1, in the first round on its way to winning the championship.

Central Catholic is red-hot right now. The Vikings, who shared the Section 4 championship, have won nine straight, including a 3-2 win against Shaler in the first round and a 6-2 quarterfinal triumph against Bethel Park. The streak also includes an 8-7 home win against Seneca Valley in the regular-season finale.

In the victory against Bethel Park, Dom Fazio and Cameron Balego led the Vikings with two hits apiece. Seneca Valley will likely pay plenty of attention to Vikings’ slugger M.P. Buckley, who hit eight home runs during the regular season, tied for the most in the WPIAL.

Seneca Valley, which won the Section 1 championship, has won seven of its past eight games. After receiving a first-round bye, the Raiders defeated Upper St. Clair, 5-2, in the quarterfinals. The Raiders are led by pitcher Matt Smith, who is 6-1, and Sam Fragale, who is hitting better than .500.
