Once queston mark, starting pitching strength for Central Catholic baseball team
Central Catholic coach Frank LaCava entered the season thinking that his team would be excellent offensively and defensively, but he was uncertain about how his starting pitchers would fare.
LaCava has been quite happy with the results.
Central Catholic is 13-4 overall and can gain a share of the Class AAAA Section 4 championship with a win against Woodland Hills today. The performance of a starting pitching staff headed by senior Dan Smith and Dom Fazio has been instrumental in the team’s success.
Both are righty’s who throw in the low 80s, but their style is a bit different. LaCava said Smith uses about three or four pitches, while Fazio relies on his fastball and curveball. In addition to their success on the mound, the two have also been excellent leaders, according to LaCava.
“They have the leadership qualities that we needed,” LaCava said. “They both are guys that want the ball. They keep the clubhouse together. They’re the type of leaders who lead by example.”
LaCava said Fazio might actually shift to the bullpen in the postseason, a move that likely move junior Matt Stoessel or sophomore Luca Farina into a starting role.
