Canon-McMillan softball team ready for PIAA semifinals
Canon McMillan continues to go where no Canon McMillan softball team has gone for. Monday brings another first, the program's first PIAA semifinal game.
The WPIAL champion Big Macs, shutout District 10 champion Erie McDowell 4-0 in the PIAA first round and then held off District 6 champion Central Mountain 6-1 in a game played over two days because of weather.
Next up for Canon McMillan is District 1 runner-up Bishop Shanahan. The teams will meet Monday at Carlisle High School at 4 p.m. On the line is a berth in the PIAA Class AAAA championship game to be played Friday at Nittany Lion Softball Park on the campus of Penn State University.
Canon McMillan lost its first two games of the season but then strung together a seven-game winning streak. Back-to-back losses to Peters Township and Belle Vernon were followed by another three-game winning streak. The Big Macs made their biggest statement of the season with a 3-0 win at Peters Township that allowed it to share the section championship with the Indians. That win over Peters Township began an eight-game winning streak that carried the program all the way to the PIAA semifinals.
