Hitting the ball a long way has carried the Canon-McMillan softball team a long way.
The Big Macs are in the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals after overpowering McKeesport 4-1 in the first round and Norwin 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
The Big Macs have hit five home runs in two playoff games. The team will pit its powerful lineup against another powerful lineup in top-seeded Shaler when the teams meet on Wednesday.
Against McKeesport, Abby McCartney and Olivia Lorusso hit back-to-back home runs and sophomore catcher Giorgiana Zerremenko added another home run. Two days later Zerremenko added two more home runs, a two-run blast and a three-run blast.
