Butler's Nesbitt wants to add PIAA boys tennis singles title to team championship

Written by John Perrotto on .

Will Nesbitt is hoping to make this season's experience at the PIAA Class AAA singles tournament much better than what happened last year.

Nesbitt won the WPIAL singles tournament for the second consecutive season last month. Both WPIAL Class AAA singles finalists earn berths into the PIAA tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club. Last season, Nesbitt's trip to Hershey was an abbreviated one -- he lost, 6-0, 6-1, to Mike Buxbaum of North Penn in the first round.

"I just wasn't mentally prepared for states," Nesbitt said. "I just wasn't used to the umpires and how official it was."

He vows to be ready this time. But he has a tough draw.

Nesbitt opens up against defending champion Michael Furr of Unionville noon today in the first round in Hershey. The quarterfinals are later Friday with the semifinals and final scheduled for Saturday.

Last season's experience aside, Nesbitt has been part of a great success in Hershey. As a sophomore, he was on the Butler team that won the PIAA Class AAA team championship there two years ago.
