Fennell a leader on and off field for Butler baseball team
A pitcher and infielder who will play at California University (Pa.) next season, Mick Fennell is doing all he can to help the Butler Area baseball team achieve all it can during his senior year.
Fennell made it among the WPIAL and City League baseball statistical leaders in three categories when the Post-Gazette published its mid-season leaders. In games played through March 23, Fennell was batting .469. He also had three pitching wins and had 31 strikeouts pitching.
Butler has a talented team, but that might not be enough to qualify for the playoffs out of what is a brutally deep Section 1-AAAA. Heading into a game Monday, the Golden Tornado (9-4, 4-4) was in fourth place and two games behind co-leaders Shaler, Seneca Valley and North Allegheny in a section in which only the top three teams are guaranteed playoff spots.
"We just have to go into every game knowing that nothing is going to come easy," Fennell said. "In this section, every team you face you have to battle it out. There's no use underestimating anyone because there's so many good teams."
When asked what the team goals are for the season, Fennell answered: "We definitely want to see how far we can go -- hopefully win WPIALs and see how far we can go in states."
