Butler girls look to retake home invitational, roughly 500 athletes to compete on Friday
“For Fridays meet, we have about 500 participants entered,” said Butler head coach Annessa Steele. “The Butler girls’ team has won this meet the last two years in a row, so the girls are excited about attempting to defend their title.”
Steele explained that the meet is both a team competition and an individual completion. For the team competition, the Butler Invitational (which is in its 48th year for the boys and its 11th year for the girls) is scored the same as any other meet involving more than two teams. That is, each team will have a score versus every other team. Likewise, the team with the most points wins the team aspect of the invitational.
The individual competition means that the top seven place winners of each event will get a medal. Additionally, two girls’ MVPs and two boys’ MVPs will be named. The MVP awards will go to whoever scores the most points for their team in the field and track, respectively.
As for Butler, the Tornado will be tough to beat. “We have a good 100-meter hurdler - Lexis Frost,” Steele said. “In the 100-meter dash we have Paige Allen. I’m looking for her to be in the finals and finish high up. In the 400, we have Jasmine Bailey. Those three girls are in the 4x100 relay with Kennedy Evans.” Steele explained that Evans is also proficient in the 300-meter hurdles and the long jump.
Bright spots on the Butler boys’ team include Nick Fennel (100-meter dash), Colin Williamson (100-meter hurdles), Anthony Paterno (pole vault), Spencer Murray (triple jump), and Josh Reed (shot put).
Field events at the invitational will begin on Friday at 12:30pm, and track events will start by 1:30pm. All events will take place on a rolling basis thereafter.
