Alumni Update: Mick Fennell (California University of Pennsylvania)

Freshman outfielder/pitcher Mick Fennell, a Butler graduate, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Player of the Week in baseball as he helped the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans split in their final series of the regular season, which earned them a tie for first place in the divisional standings and the top seed in the PSAC Tournament.

Over the course of three games against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Fennell posted a .556 batting average, going 5-for-9 with three triples. Fennell also registered a .600 on-base percentage, a 1.222 slugging percentage, five RBI, and five runs scored.

Alumni Update: Nick Rossmiller (Thiel) 043013

Thiel senior Nick Rossmiller was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Rossmiller, a Butler graduate, made one start and one relief appearance. He locked down a 3-2 win at Waynesburg in his first outing. After watching a two-on, nobody out situation develop in the bottom of the ninth, Rossmiller was summoned from his spot at first base to close it out for the Tomcats. Rossmiller retired both batters he faced and saw a runner caught stealing in securing his first collegiate save.

Butler track team’s Allen received KDKA award plus mentions on the X Morning Show

Last week, Butler Area’s Paige Allen received the KDKA Extra Effort Award – a weekly award given to exceptional high school students.

Allen, a senior, is a co-captain of the Golden Tornado cheerleading squad. The squad won its first-ever state championship this year, and Allen has continued her athletic achievements in track season. A veteran sprinter on the Butler team, Allen took fifth place in the 100-meter dash in the Tornado’s home invitational on April 12. Her time in the event was 13.26 seconds. That same day, Allen placed fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.59). There were approximately 60 entries from 29 teams in each event.

The Extra Effort award was bestowed to Allen for her athletic achievements in cheerleading and track, but also for her academics and her community involvement. According to this KDKA video (http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/video/8789118-extra-effort-paige-allen/), Allen holds three school track records and is maintaining a 4.1 GPA. Allen also volunteers with the Miracle League, assisting people affected by Down’s Syndrome.
