Brashear’s Girdwood one of P-G’s pitching leaders, Bulls update

Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

According to information made available to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette through Monday, April 23, 2012, Brashear softball’s Kaylee Girdwood is 5-0 for pitching wins. The Bulls are 6-0(5-0) and defeated Langley yesterday 15-1. The Brashear softball team is in first place atop the City League.

Brashear’s only non-League game so far this season has been against Geibel Catholic, and Brashear won 15-0. The Bulls have had two postpones games; March 29th versus Westinghouse and April 24th versus Perry. Brashear’s next scheduled game is this coming Tuesday (May 1st) at Westinghouse. The Bulldogs are currently 0-4.

Brashear head coach Hank Hogle once told Sports Town that he allows his players to “own” their own locker room. That is, the Brashear softball team feeds off of the leadership of its own student-athletes. Veterans like Girdwood, shortstop Anna Bruecken, third baseman Karlee Ralston, and outfielder Chelsea Minsinger came into the 2012 season knowing the “ropes” and culture of Brashear softball. Likewise, the younger talents like second baseman Kelly Flaherty and outfielder Danielle Paez may enjoy learning from the veterans. Younger Brashear players and older ones alike can interact and learn from each other. No coach dictates the team’s chemistry in any way.

Clearly, the system is working.
The Brashear/Westinghouse game’s first pitch is set for 3:15pm at Stargell Field.
