Stuber back in high school hockey and leading Blackhawk

Written by Ryan Riordan on .

Five years ago was the last time Matt Stuber coached high school hockey.

Then he was the coach of Beaver. But he left to work with the Pittsburgh Junior Penguins.

It was a lot of travel, especially on the weekends. When a friend asked him if we was interested in going back to high school hockey with Blackhawk, Stuber agreed.
Now he has the Cougars looking to go deep in the playoffs.

Blackhawk is 4-1 and is tied for the lead the Open Division Section 3 with eight points. The team was 6-12-2 in 2011-12.

“I think they are playing together more,” Stuber said. “I think they are all on the same page now and are playing our system.”

Stuber inherited a team with a gifted goal-scorer in Daren Broadis. The senior forward had 26 goals and 11 assists last season and already has 12 goals and nine assists this season.

“He is built like a hockey player,” Stuber said.

But Blackhawk has more than just one scorer. Kyle Schaefer, Josh McCuean and Nicholas Gray all have 10 points this season.

Meanwhile in goal, Grant Rombold has stopped 65-of-77 shots with a 2.40 goals-against average in playing all 255 minutes this season so far.

Even with the fast start, Stuber said the goal right now is just to get into the playoffs and see what transpires.

“One of our biggest goals is just to get to the playoffs,” Stuber said. “Once you get to the playoffs, it’s anybody’s game.”

Blackhawk plays Trinity tonight at 6:45 at the Beaver County Ice Arena.
