Blackhawk cross country: Zach Black ran “the race of his life”

Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

Blackhawk senior Zach Black enjoyed a trip to states this weekend, but he earned it with what head coach Alexandra Bougher called “the race of his life.”

Black crossed the finish line third in the boys’ Class AA race at the WPIAL championships on October 25. His time was 17:05 on the Cooper’s Lake Course.

Black’s trip to Hershey had an added bonus in that it was unencumbered by soccer. Black played on Blackhawk’s soccer team, which lost to Belle Vernon in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. “He was finally able to focus on cross country now that soccer season is over,” Bougher said.

Black was one of the Cougars’ soccer team’s captains, as well as what Bougher called “an integral part of our Cross Country team.” Bougher added that Black holds the school’s record in the 1600-meter event in track.

Although Black will be missed at Blackhawks following his graduation, it’s important to mention sophomore Noah Ross. Ross also attended the state meet at Hershey yesterday. He had qualified by placing 14th at the WPIAL meet. Ross is likely to be an important leader for Blackhawk cross country in the coming years.
