Blackhawk's Chandler Kincade is PG's boys' sports athlete of the week

Written by Mike White and Brad Everett on .

Last week: Kincade completed 16 of 19 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars defeated Ambridge, 34-20, to earn a WPIAL Class AAA playoff berth.

Check this out: Chandler is a 6-foot-5, 218-pound junior who is considered one of the top quarterbacks in Western Pennsylvania. He finished the regular season as the second-leading passer in the WPIAL, completing 132 of 210 passes (63 percent) for 1,883 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has been a starter since his freshman year. As a sophomore, he made a verbal commitment to Pitt.

The past few weeks, have you been playing the best in your career? I think I have. I think our whole team is playing its best this year, too.

Is this offense a lot different than your first two years? My freshman year, the offense was much more basic. Last year, we started to add some more. This year, we really have a lot of new things. It's a great offense. I love it. The whole team loves it. But it's not really that complicated.

You guys have lost a lot of close games. What's the feeling on the team heading into the playoffs against Mars? We have the full amount of confidence that we can beat anybody. If you look at our games, we had West Allegheny beat. We had Montour beat. We had Hopewell beat. So we're not afraid of any team, really.

You committed to Pitt as a sophomore when Todd Graham was coach. Where do things stand now? Once coach [Paul] Chryst came in, we talked. I held my commitment. They were OK with me looking around a little bit, but right now I still see myself committed to Pitt. We'll just see where it goes.

You were a good basketball player as a freshman, but didn't play last year. Any chance you'll play this year? I'll decide after football.

Any significance to your first name? I was actually born in Indiana and Chandler was the town where the hospital was.
