Baseball: West Feature Athlete - Blackhawk's Matt Emge

Written by Sports Town on .

Name: Matt Emge
High School: Blackhawk
Grade: 12
Sport: Baseball
Position: Catcher

Background info: Matt Emge will be playing his baseball at The Ohio State University next season but he’s not looking to end his high school season any soon. Batting .441 with a pair of home runs and 26 runs batted in as the Cougar’s cleanup hitter, he has led Blackhawk to the top seed in the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs. Statistically, he can only claim three runners thrown out because most opponents are choosing to run against him and test the arm, so numbers don’t measure his full value.

Coach Bob Amalia said: “Matt is having a fantastic year. Once he made his college decision, you could see the pressure was off and he’s been totally relaxed. That’s been a big factor in his success - that was really a big decision. He’s been fortunate to have Brendan McKay hitting in front of him and Tyler Craig and Steve O’Hara behind him so teams have had to pitch to him and he’s having just a great year with the bat.”
