Blackhawk girls lacrosse team harbors playoff hopes

Written by Joe Koch on .

With an overall record of 8-8 and a 7-8 mark against WPIAL Division 2, Section 2 opponents, the Blackhawk High girls lacrosse team has realistic playoff hopes entering Wednesday's regular-season finale at Vincentian Academy.

It's a crucial game for both teams that appear to be evenly matched. Blackhawk won the first regular-season meeting between the two teams, 8-7, on the Cougars' campus. The stakes could be even higher than they are right now as the 4-6 Royals meet Butler Area and Hampton on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Vincentian then closes out its season hosting No. 9 Shaler Area a week from Monday.

A playoff berth would be a significant step for the Cougars, who are in their second season as a program. Last year, the Cougars played a WPIAL Division 2 schedule and lost all 13 of the games it played. This year, with a better-than-.500 record a distinct possibility, the Cougars have been highly competitive in most of their games. While Blackhawk lost both regular-season games to defending WPIAL Division 2 champion North Hills, the second game between the two teams was highly competitive with the unbeaten Indians eking out a 14-11 victory. In the first meet, North Hills rolled to a 14-5 triumph.

Blackhawk will have plenty of rest entering Wednesday's game with Vincentian. The Cougars last played last Wednesday, dropping a 15-12 decision to No. 9 Shaler Area.
