Blackhawk girls lacrosse team flirts with winning record in second season
Blackhawk High's second-year girls lacrosse program appeared to be headed toward a losing season as a three-game losing streak dropped the Cougars' record to 3-5 after eight games.
But Blackhawk has rebounded nicely, winning four of its last five games, including a 12-6 victory over Hempfield that lifted the Cougars overall record to 7-6 and 6-6 in section play.
The Cougars' playoff hopes remain alive as they are in fourth place out of nine teams in Division 2, Section 2. And their destiny is in their own hands.
Following Monday's game at Hampton, the Cougars host Shaler Area on Wednesday and visit Vincentian Academy a week later. Shaler and Hampton are in second and third place, respectively, while Blackhawk is fourth. Vincentian still has playoff hopes as the Royals are 4-4 overall and in section play. Finishing among the top four teams in section play is crucial as those top four teams advance to the WPIAL Division 2 tournament.
Such a premise a year ago would not have been possible as Blackhawk lost all 13 of the games it played.
