Bethel Park hockey team starts title defense with loss to top-ranked North Allegheny

Written by Ryan Riordan on .

When Bethel Park and North Allegheny met in the Class AAA Penguins Cup quarterfinals, three periods weren’t enough to decide the outcome.

Neither were a couple overtimes.

Eventually, Derek Lesnak scored in the third overtime to lift the Black Hawks to win on their journey to the Penguins Cup title.

The two teams met again Tuesday and once again, Lesnak scored. But that was the only goal for Bethel Park in a 7-1 loss to the Class AAA No. 1-ranked Tigers.

It was the third game with North Allegheny, while it was Bethel Park’s first contest. The two teams did meet a few weeks ago in the St. Margaret’s Foundation Fall Faceoff Tournament, with North Allegheny also winning that game 5-2 on its way to the preseason tournament title.

Austin McGinty got the loss in net Tuesday, stopping 28-of-35 shots.
