Bethel Park’s trip to WPIAL track team finals hung on a battle with North Allegheny
The Blackhawks’ girls team beat Gateway last Wednesday 97-53. Bethel Park beat Moon 109-41. But the score between Bethel Park and North Allegheny was much closer: 82.7-67.3.
The 15.4-point span is little more than three first places in an 18-event competition. That’s how close North Allegheny was to going to championships as a team tomorrow. But Amanda Ruschel stole one first in the 400-meter, Hillary Boxheimer stole one in the 3200, and the 4x100-meter relay team also sprinted out a win. A tie for third place in the pole vault yielded the unusual 0.4 differential.
The Bethel Park girls’ most recent performances included medal-winners at the Baldwin Invitational last Friday. Amanda Ruschel and Kelsey Metheny took third and fourth places (respectively) in the 800-meter race. Hillary Boxheimer took second in the 3200-meter race. That same day, the 4x800-meter relay team of Ruschel, Metheny, Hillary Boxheimer, and Stephanie Cobb won first place. The relay team’s time was 9:24.79.
It’s likely that the Bethel Park team will use distance running as a launching point for scoring tomorrow. Many of the distance runners who have come in before Bethel Park’s at invitationals will not be present at the team finals tomorrow.
