Bethel Park hockey team moves into second place among Penguins Cup winners

Written by Chris Adamski on .

Even down late against an extremely talented team that hadn't lost to a Pennsylvania-based high school team all season, the Bethel Park hockey team never actually believed it would lose.

That's what happens when you don't, in fact, lose for a span of almost three months.

Bethel Park won 15 consecutive games between Jan. 5 and March 24, taking its seventh PIHL Penguins Cup Class AAA championship in the process. Sunday, the Black Hawks lost for the first time since Dec. 15 when La Salle College High School beat them, 6-2, in the Pennsylvania Cup state championship game at the Island Sports Center on Neville Island.

"Honestly," said Bethel Park senior defenseman Jake Brown, "I never once believed we were going to lose this game. Not once during the whole game, not even down 6-2 with one minute left. We got that power play, and I thought we were going to win it."

Bethel Park didn't, but that shouldn't take away from a season that will be remembered for its seventh Penguins Cup, joining the 1983, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005 teams.

The 15-game winning streak is also memorable. During that stretch, the Black Hawks outscored opponents, 72-24.
