Bethel Park junior was a WPIAL quarterfinalist
Bethel Park junior Colin Bandell was a quarterfinalist last week in his first trip to the WPIAL Class AAA singles tournament. Bandell was the No. 9 seed and defeated Mt. Lebanon's Josh Smith, 10-6, in the first round and lost to No. 1 seed Vivek Nimgaonkar of Shady Side Academy, 10-6, in the quarterfinals.
"He's a very strong competitor," Black Hawks coach Doug Addington said of Bandell. "He's had a couple really nice comebacks this year against some top players. He's athletically gifted and strong with very good footwork. He's a strong player with a baseline-type game, very athletic. Just a good player."
Bandell has played first singles for Bethel Park for much of this season. He plays second singles currently. He teamed with Dante Rebelo last season to win the Section 5-AAA doubles title, qualifying for the WPIAL doubles tournament. This season's section tournament will be held late next week.
"Colin's a grinder," Bethel Park's new first singles player, freshman Caleb Troy, said. "He makes you hit a really good shot, and he's super fast. He gets to everything, and not only does he get to everything, he comes up with some pretty terrific shots and is a really consistent player. Any time you play him, you have to play your best to in order to beat him. He makes you finish shots and finish points."
