Bentworth baseball team to play familiar foe in consolation game
Bentworth suffered a heartbreaking loss to California in the WPIAL Class A semifinals, but the Bearcats can take solace in the fact their season isn’t over yet.
The Bearcats (17-2) will play Section 2 rival Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (16-6) for the third time this season when the teams meet in the third-place consolation game Wednesday at Washington & Jefferson College at 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to the PIAA playoffs to play the District 9 champion on Monday, June 4.
Bentworth won the two earlier meetings fairly handily. The Bearcats earned a 9-3 road win on April 10 and then gained a 14-4 home victory at OLSH on April 27.
The Bearcats were oh so close to advancing to the championship game. They lost to undefeated California, 2-1, in nine innings in Monday’s semifinal. Both of Bentworth’s losses have been by one run.
OLSH lost to Neshannock, 6-1, in the other semifinal. The Chargers had won seven games in a row, including a 6-5 victory against defending PIAA champion Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals.
