Belle Vernon girls' soccer team to make historic trip to states

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Belle Vernon bounced back from a disappointing WPIAL Class AA semifinal loss to Mars, to knock off No. 3 Central Valley 1-0 in the third-place game and qualify for the PIAA playoffs for the first time in program history.

Belle Vernon (18-3-1) faces District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep today at Fairview High School at 5 p.m. If Belle Vernon can knock off Mercyhurst Prep, it can set up a rematch with Mars in the quarterfinals.

The Leopards qualified for the PIAA playoffs thanks to senior midfielder Lauren Kovalchuk scoring the lone goal of the game against Central Valley on Saturday. Kovalchuk struck at the 20-minute mark of the second half and the Belle Vernon defense made sure it held up.
