It's been a sensational spring for the Belle Vernon basetball team

With many key ingredients back from last season’s playoff qualifier, the Belle Vernon baseball team seemed to have the recipe for a big season this spring.

It turns out those expectations were right on the mark.

Belle Vernon is having one of its best seasons in recent memory. The Leopards boast an 8-3 record and are in a four-way tie for first place in WPIAL Class AAA Section 2 with a 5-2 record.

The Leopards, who are coached by Dan Palm, are led by junior outfielder Adam Ferita. An all-section choice a season ago, Ferita is in his third season a starter.

Winning has become the norm for the Leopards despite the absence of standout pitcher Dom Francia, who has not played because of a leg injury. Francia went 7-0 in the regular season a year ago, when the Leopards went 11-9 and finished in a tie for second in the section. The Leopards went on to lose to Chartiers Valley in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.
