"With one of the youngest coaches in the WPIAL and with one of the youngest teams in the WPIAL, the Baldwin High School softball team, captured the Section 4-AAAA title last year.

Samantha Hovanec was 23 when she took over as softball coach at her alma mater last season. Her team had just two seniors.

Now Hovanec is in her second season and her team features six returning senior starters. Everyone is a year older and a year more mature, but as hungry as ever.

"With us winning the section last year, the girls kind of got a taste for it," Hovanec said. "We would like to defend it and win it again -- that would give us a boost going into the playoffs."

Just like last season when Baldwin edged Peters Township and Canon-McMillan by one game each to capture the section crown, the Section 4-AAAA title will likely be decided with a pair of games against the Indians and Big Macs."
