Avonworth baseball team looking to repeat last year's performance
The Avonworth baseball team bounced back from an uncharacteristically poor 2010 season in which it went 4-14 by contending for the Section 4-A title last season. The Antelopes have a senior-dominated roster in hopes of repeating that performance.
Fourth-year coach Phil Coffin lists 10 seniors among his top 11 players: Outfielder Brain Vales, infielder Jon Graham, catcher Bryan Bartram, pitcher/infielder Clayton Cuteri, outfielder Joe Glanate, pitcher Jake Winter, pitcher Tyler Noethiger, pitcher/infielder Coby Croft, outfielder Jack Rind and outfielder Carl Pietriniski.
Junior pitcher/infielder Mike Clark is also expected to be a significant contributor.
Avonworth went 10-4 in section play last season, finishing a half-game behind section champion North Catholic and tied with Vincentian and Leechburg. The Antelopes are off to a 1-4 start after losing their section opener, 5-3, to Vincentian Monday. Avonworth's next scheduled game is at Leechburg Wednesday.
