Avonworth boys basketball team heats up as calendar turns to 2012

Written by Chris Adamski on .

If the Avonworth boys basketball team made a New Year's resolution, it likely would have wanted to resolve to play like they did over the final two and a half weeks of 2011.

The Antelopes have won four of five heading into a scheduled game 7:30 p.m. today at Aliquippa (2-4, 1-1 Section). Wins against South Side Beaver and Fort LeBouef Dec. 27-28 at the Carlynton tournament last week improved Avonworth to 5-3 overall. The Antelopes have lost the only section game they've played thus far -- 69-55 to Freedom Dec. 20.

Ryan Pearson led Avonworth in scoring over its five-game hot stretch with 69 points (12.9 per game). But the Antelopes have gotten offensive contributions from a variety of players all season. Brian Vales, Jesse Zubik, Matt Kujawinski, Coby Croft, Ryan Welsh and Dalton Day all have scored at least 10 points in at least one game this season.

The Antelopes are hoping to avoid what happened after a similar start last season when they started 5-4 but lost 10 of their final 13 games.
