Youth not a problem for Avonworth Lady Lopes basketball team
The Avonworth girls' basketball program is successful in spite of having a young team this season due to roster turnover. Story by Nicholas Tolomeo.
"Veteran Avonworth High School girls' basketball coach Bob Schulz retired as a teacher in 2005 while continuing to coach the basketball team.
Six years later, and Schulz is still coaching ... and teaching.
With the youngest team he has had in his 30 years as a basketball coach, Schulz is spending most of his practice time teaching.
"Never in my life have I had a team this young," he said. "We spend a lot of our practices teaching, we do a lot of drill work over and over to try and get these kids where we need to be at this point and time."
The Lady Lopes consist of one senior, one junior, six sophomores and six freshmen."
