Hockey: 2017 West Season Recap

Moon is becoming one of those great regular-season teams that can't find a way to get it done in the playoffs.

For the second consecutive season, the Tigers won their division and were perhaps the best team in the Class 2A playoffs. And, like 2016, they couldn't get out of the first round as they were once again upset by a play-in team in the first round of the tournament.

Last season it was Baldwin that did Moon in and Latrobe did the honors this time around with a decisive, 6-3, victory over the Tigers.

Montour continues to make things difficult for teams in Class 1A. The Spartans were the fifth-place finisher in the West Division, barely qualified for the playoffs and nearly lost to Kiski Area in the preliminary round of the Penguins Cup playoffs.

Instead of folding, Montour went on a nice run, with an upset of Baldwin in the first round before losing a 5-4 heartbreaker in overtime against Indiana.

Both West Allegheny and Beaver Area had problems with upward moved. The Indians were 2-17-0 in head coach Brian Boehm's first season, while the 2016 Division 2 champions went 7-11-0 and missed the Class 1A playoffs by one point.
