Girls Swimming: West Season Preview

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

The West Allegheny girls’ swim team are the two-time defending WPIAL Class AA team champions but it will be a rebuilding year this season for veteran coach Bob Miller. The Indians graduate WPIAL gold medalists Ashley Niznik, Amanda Gannon and Emily Pia. They will build the team around senior Kara Kaulius, one of the top distance swimmers in the state, sophomore Kiera Acitelli, sophomore Casey Tokarski, a member of the gold medal 400 freestyle relay team from WPIALs last season, senior Sydney Mangis and senior Nadiya Wahl, a member of the 200-yard medley relay last season that won gold at WPIALs. West Allegheny took the team title home last season with 304 total points to beat out Blackhawk and South Fayette who both finished with 212.

Blackhawk should challenge West Allegheny again with juniors Alexis Lopez and Casey Cerbus back this season. Hopewell returns a strong senior class including Alexandra Guzma who won WPIAL silver last year in the 50 freestyle. Seniors Hannah Palochak and Kara Walker are also back for the Vikings. Palochak took silver at WPIALs in the 100 backstroke last year.
