Are Rochester, Sto-Rox on road to football rematch?

Written by Sports Town on .

The Big Seven Conference was the only conference in the WPIAL to advance every playoff team into the second round but that is guaranteed not to continue. Conference foes Sto-Rox and Union will meet Friday night in a Class A quarterfinal playoff game at Mars and one will definitely have to be eliminated.

Sto-Rox is coming off a 40-7 thumping of Carmichaels as Lenny Williams passed for three scores and ran for two for the Vikings. The third-quarter score by Carmichaels was the first touchdown Sto-Rox allowed after three consecutive shutouts.

In fact, Union was the last team to score on Sto-Rox in the regular season as the Vikings prevailed 48-21 at Union. Getting past the Scotties one more time could put Sto-Rox on a collision course with Rochester.

The Rams bounced back from being shut out by Sto-Rox in the regular-season finale to thump Avonworth 35-15 in a first-round game, jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead behind 194 rushing yards by Dante Marsick.

Standing between the Rams and a rematch with Sto-Rox is North Catholic, who Rochester will play Friday night at Dormont Stadium. The Trojans are 8-2 and one of their losses was in a Big Seven crossover game with Neshannock.
