Riverside, Freedom could meet in baseball playoffs for second year in a row

Written by Sports Town on .

The last time the Riverside and Freedom baseball teams played on the same field, it was in the first round of the 2011 WPIAL playoffs on the field at Chippewa Park. Riverside won that game 6-1 and never lost again in the playoffs, capturing both the WPIAL and PIAA Class AA titles.

The teams will be playing on the same field again in the first round of the 2012 playoffs, but not against each other. The teams are scheduled to meet today at Pullman Park in the first round of the playoffs – Freedom (11th seeded, 12-7 record) playing Deer Lakes (6th, 10-8) at 2:00 and Riverside (3rd, 15-5) playing Greensburg Central Catholic (14th, 12-6) at approximately 4:30.

The two teams, though neighbors, did not meet this season as Riverside tied for the section title in Section 5-AA  and Freedom finished third in Section 1-AA. Riverside fans, though, won’t be disappointed if the two teams meet again in the playoffs, it was the start of something big a year ago.
