Girls' Basketball: South Class AAA Preview

Written by Joe Koch on .

South Park High didn't have many disappointments en route to a 24-4 record a year ago that featured appearances in the WPIAL Class AAA championship game and a gallant effort against Archbishop Wood that ended in a 59-56 loss in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals.

South Park did lose six seniors from that solid team from a season ago, but the Eagles have retained their most productive players from last year's team. They are senior guard Shelby Lindsay, who averaged 15 points a game and junior forward Hallie Torris, who was right behind Lindsay at 14 points a game.

South Park made a lateral move from Section 4-AAA to Section 5-AAA, but the Eagles are expected to be the top team in the section.
Teams from the South area in this section include Keystone Oaks, South Fayette and Trinity.

South Fayette had a solid season a year ago with an overall record of 17-9 and a section mark of 8-2. The Lions lost all-section player Erika Ford, who averaged 18 points a game. Senior point guard Cait McLockie averaged 12 points a game as a junior.

Keystone Oaks had a great season a year ago, advancing to the WPIAL Class AA semifinals along with fellow conference members Seton-LaSalle, Bishop Canevin and eventual WPIAL and PIAA Class AA state champion Seton-LaSalle.

The 20-8 Eagles, however, have stepped up a class without one of their top players, Alexa Xenakis, who averaged 15.1 points a game as a senior. But junior power forward Maryssa Agurs is expected to have a solid season. As a sophomore, Agurs averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds a game.

Trinity was 7-16 a year ago, and the Hillers lost Morgan Kurtz, who averaged 16.5 points a game. Lauren Simpson, a 5-6 senior point guard, is expected to be the team's leader this season.
