Girls Volleyball: 2012 South Season Recap

2011_0903_VB_Lebo_NA_3Sports Town will review the 2011-12 school year during July. Today we revisit the girls volleyball season.

The Mt. Lebanon girls volleyball team entered the WPIAL Class AAA Tournament as the No. 6 seed after winning the Section 5-AAA title. The Blue Devils defeated Kiski Area, 3-1, in the first round, then upset No. 3 seed Penn-Trafford, 3-0, in the quarterfinals. They fell one win short of a title berth after dropping a 3-0 decision in the semifinals to eventual champion Seneca Valley.

Upper St. Clair won the Section 2-AAA title and was seeded No. 5 in the WPIAL bracket. The Panthers posted a 3-0 win in the first round against Latrobe, but were defeated 3-1 in the quarterfinals by No. 4 seed North Allegheny.

Baldwin placed second in Section 5-AAA and was seeded No. 7. The Highlanders swept Fox Chapel, 3-0, in the first round, but were swept by Seneca Valley in the quarterfinal.

Peters Township placed second in Section 2-AAA and was seeded No. 8. The Indians edged Plum, 3-2, in the first round, then lost 3-0 to eventual runner-up Pine-Richland.

In Class A, Bishop Canevin and Bentworth tied for the Section 6-A title and both advanced to the semifinals. Bentworth, the No. 3 seed, swept Jefferson-Morgan, 3-0, then beat Frazier, 3-1. Bishop Canevin, the No. 4 seed, recorded 3-0 victories against Beaver County Christian and Greensburg Central.

Both were defeated in the semifinals in five-set marathons. Top seed and eventual champion Elderton beat Bishop Canevin, while Avonworth defeated Bentworth. The two met for the third time in the consolation final and Bentworth earned a PIAA berth with a 3-2 win.
