Chartiers Valley, Bethel Park to meet in girls lacrosse showdown

Written by Joe Koch on .

Back in March when forecasts of snow were very much a fabric of life in Western Pennsylvania, the Chartiers Valley High girls lacrosse team began the 2012 season with a WPIAL Division 2, Section 1 showdown against Bethel Park.

The Black Hawks won that match-up, 12-10. As is the case with sectional opponents, the two teams met again less than a month later. This time, Chartiers Valley won at Bethel Park by a 12-5 score. The teams will meet again at 6 p.m. on Monday. While Chartiers Valley was defeating Blackhawk, 10-3, in one quarterfinal, Bethel Park was surviving an 11-10 nail biter with Hampton.

As is the case with two evenly matched teams, that season split has been the only blemish on otherwise spotless records for both teams. With matching 17-1 records, the teams will meet in the WPIAL Division 2 semifinals at 6 p.m. Monday at North Hills High School.

The winner advances to the WPIAL championship against the winner of Tuesday's semifinal between unbeaten North Hills and the winner of Friday's quarterfinal between Shaler and The Ellis School. The team that loses on Monday will find its season over as there is no state playoff in place for Division 2 teams.

In Thursday's victory over Blackhawk, the Colts hit the post on their first four shots, but then scored six first-half goals to secure the victory.

Senior attack Brooke Czarnecki scored three of her team-leading four goals for the Colts in the first half, but it was the quick, efficient passing that pleased Gould the most.

"It was a team effort up and down the field," she said. "Our midfield connection (of Erica Wilkerson, Jennifer Rickens and Talia Cruz) was incredible."

Coach Julie Gould said Chartiers Valley lacrosse is to play the style that best suits the Colts.

"Teams come to us," she said. "We play at our level no matter what the team is. We do have prom this weekend, but we'll come out Sunday and practice like we normally do."

Czarnecki said the opening-day loss to Bethel Park served as a harsh wake up call.

"We didn't play as a team, and we didn't play to our full potential," she said. "We weren't ready for the season in our first game. After that game, we started playing as a team."

Czarnecki said the Colts have been proficient at finding the open player which leads to a lot of shots on goal.

"You have to think fast and look for the open girl," she said. "That's what we did for half of our goals. It worked out because they left us open."

Czarnecki expects a tough game with the Blackhawks.

"Bethel is our rival," she said.
