South girls WPIAL individual track competition: Don’t leave out any ‘non-team qualifiers’

Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

When we think of Sports Town South track teams, many think of Bethel Park. And they should. But as the competition shifts toward individual events, even the Blackhawks will have a run for their money. (That’s good – they like to run.)

Mt. Lebanon girls’ sprinters work well as a team. The Blue Devils’ 4x100 relay team is second-seeded with a qualifying time of 49.53.

Other girls’ sprinters from the South include Ringgold’s Christina Wills. Wills has qualified to compete for the district in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Chartiers Valley’s Dejalynn Peterson has dominated the 400-meter races this season at invitationals. Unsurprisingly she has one of the top qualifying times for the 400 for this week as well: 57.14 seconds.

In the field, it’s important to note that Canon McMillan’s Kathleen Davey is not far behind the qualifying shot distances of Butler and Norwin throwers. Davey is at 38-6.5. Also from Canon-Mac, Anna Lombardo had a qualifying discus throw of 112-2. Mira Carrozza is also throwing the javelin above 140-feet for the Big Macs.

Although so many South athletes in track and field are strong, the important thing to realize is how stacked the competition will be in every event on Thursday. The limited number of teams that can vie for team titles is misleading when the track season gets to individual competition.
