Mt. Lebanon, West Mifflin track teams hosting today, additional South teams in Class AAA semis
WPIAL track team semifinals are today at 3pm. This means we finally get an idea of how to answer the age-old question: just what went on in all those section meets?
The Bethel Park girls’ track team won Section 6-AAA, beating out a very strong set of teams. Today, the Blackhawks will be at host site Gateway. The Bethel Park girls will have their work cut out for them with North Allegheny, Moon, and Gateway. But ‘work’ is not something Bethel Park shies away from. Last week, they edged Mt. Lebanon with points from only three events.
Mt. Lebanon will host today as both Blue Devils’ boys’ and girls’ teams are entered. These two programs have built too many accolades this season to even list here. Recently, however, the Mt. Lebanon girls’ sprint races have stood out. They swept the 100 and 200-meter events at Bethel Park last week. The Mt. Lebanon boys’ team finished second overall to Gateway at the TSTCA Outdoor Championships held at West Mifflin on April 21. (The event ranked a total of 26 boys’ teams).
Similarly, West Mifflin boys’ and girls’ teams will host as well as participate. Last weekend at the Jaguar Invitational, the Titans’ Becky Scholl won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:24.64. At the same meet, the West Mifflin boys had winners in the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter run, and the triple jump. The West Mifflin boys also won the 4x100-meter relay.
The West Mifflin boys’ team will be in for a challenge today. They’ll host New Castle, Uniontown, and Baldwin. Baldwin is the runner-up to Mt. Lebanon out of Section 6-AAA.
The remaining South teams on today’s brackets are from West Mifflin’s section (Section 7-AAA). The Elizabeth Forward girls’ team will head to Hempfield today, and the Chartiers Valley boys will compete at Mt. Lebanon.
