Boys Tennis: South WPIAL Doubles Championship preview
Section championship doubles teams from Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Bishop Canevin and Washington embark on WPIAL tournaments at two sites today.
The Blue Devils' Peter Hazlett and Josh Smith and Black Hawks' Collin Bandell and Dante Rebello will play first-round matches in the Class AAA doubles tournament 1 p.m. today at Shady Side Academy. The Crusaders' Kevin Mechas and Marc Slomiany and the Prexies' Nick Cumer and Robert Engle begin play in the Class AA doubles tournament 1 p.m. today at North Allegheny.
The first three rounds of the events will be staged at those respective sites, with the championship match and consolation in each classification scheduled for Friday at Shady Side Academy. The top two finishers in Class AAA and the top three in Class AA earn berths in the PIAA tournament for that classification, which will be held in Hershey later this month.
Mechas and Slomiany beat Keegan Shudy and Jake Mascaro of Thomas Jefferson in the Section 5-AA title match last week. Both those duos -- along with third-place Nick Merlina and Ryan Mastilak of Bishop Canevin -- will take part in the WPIAL tournament.
The team that Bandell and Rebello beat in the Section 5-AAA final -- Matt Subosits and Mitch Kreider -- and the team that came in third, Chartiers Valley's Nadim El-Jaroudi and Jesse Standard, all qualified out of Section 5-AAA.
Mt. Lebanon's Peter Hazlett and Josh Smith lost to their teammates in the Section 4-AAA final, but also will be going to the WPIAL tournament along with third-place Domenick D'Amico and Mike Russell of Upper St. Clair.
