Quite a few North girls’ running, jumping, and throwing stars for WPIAL individual champs
As we shift from team focus to individual focus in track and field. It’s hard to ignore the North girls’ distance runners. Margo Malone, Shannon Malone, and Mary Malone of North Hills are at or near the tops of the qualifier lists in the 800-, 1600-, and 3200-meter dashes. However, the Malones would be the first to tell anyone that their competition was tough, even from other North schools.
Hampton, Knoch, and Shaler are also notable for distance presence. Knoch’s Samantha Logan and Hampton’s Gina Alm will be running to win in the 800-meter race. Logan has been successful over shorter distances as well. Likewise, Knoch’s middle distance relay teams will be tough to beat.
In the field, Fox Chapel golf sensation Katerina Luttner is continuing to launch a ball, but this time it’s a shot put. Other North field competitors are Butler’s Ava Bonetti (shot and discus), and North Allegheny’s Brooke Mancuso (pole vault). Also from Butler, Paige Rittelman is second-ranked in the high jump competition (in Class AAA).
In Class AA, it’s hard to argue with anyone from the champion Freeport team. But there are many other North notables competing in girls’ Class AA. They include:
Caitlin Bungo (Sewickley Academy) – 800-meter, 1600-meter, 3200-meter
Emily Lelis (Springdale) – 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash
Also, Avonworth/Northgate is at or near the top of each relay list.
(Note that this team has recently been realigned to Class AA).
