Hampton, Sewickley Academy, Shady Side Academy advanced in PIAA boys tennis tourneys

Written by Chris Adamski on .

Three teams from the North area began play in the PIAA boys tennis team championships Tuesday.

All three won -- with ease.

Sewickley Academy and Hampton won first-round matches in the Class AA tournament and Shady Side Academy won in the first round of the Class AAA tournament. Each won by a 5-0 score.

WPIAL Class AAA champion Shady Side Academy defeated District 9 champion DuBois at Lakevue Racquet Club in Middlesex Township. The Indians' Vivek Nimgaonkar (first singles), Alok Nimgaonkar (second singles), Chris Grubbs (third singles), Aaron Budd and Eric Grubbs (first doubles) and Henry Cohen and Naveen Menon (second doubles) each swept to straight-set victories.

"We have unbelievable confidence in our second doubles team," said Vivek Nimgaonkar, a senior. "Naveen Menon has been on the team four years and this is actually the first year he's been starting, but he and Henry are the two best players in two doubles around here. I think they've proven that. And we're confident they're going to keep performing when we go to the state tournament next week."

Shady Side Academy advances to Hershey, where the quarterfinals in both classifications will be held Friday.

Sewickley Academy and Hampton also will be there, as part of the Class AA bracket.
