Plenty of North boys tennis teams advance to quarterfinals
The quarterfinals for the WPIAL team tennis tournaments are set for today. They will have a distinct North flavor to them.
Shady Side Academy, North Allegheny, Fox Chapel and Butler all won first-round Class AAA tournament matches Monday. In Class AA, defending champion Sewickley Academy received a bye into the quarterfinals and its Section 3-AA rival, Hampton, won its first-round match, 5-0, against Burrell.
"We had a good first round today," Talbots coach Grant McKinney said. "It's nice to get that playoff taste -- and it's always good to get that first playoff win (of the season)."
No. 2 seed Hampton has qualified for the PIAA tournament each of the past two seasons. The Talbots are two victories away from advancing to Hershey again this season. Next up is Beaver today.
Against Burrell, Hampton's three singles players combined to lose only four games in their three matches.
No. 1 seed Sewickley Academy will play Indiana in the quarterfinals. The No. 1 seed in Class AAA, Shady Side Academy, swept Chartiers Valley, 5-0, and will play Bethel Park in the quarterfinals today.
All four Class AAA quarterfinals will feature at least one North team. No. 4 seed Fox Chapel will play Upper St. Clair after the Foxes beat Latrobe, 4-1.
Fox Chapel's fate in that match could be determined by how healthy first singles player Ben Short is. Short withdrew from his match against Chad Kissell Monday.
"We'll see how he feels," Foxes coach David Prevost said. "We don't want to ruin him for (the PIAA doubles tournament later this month)."
No. 3 seed North Allegheny shut out Baldwin, 5-0, and Butler edged Peters Township, 3-2. In a showdown of two of the better singles players in the WPIAL, the Golden Tornado's Will Nesbitt defeated the Indians' Mitch Kreider, 7-6, 6-4, in what was the deciding match.
North Allegheny will play Central Catholic and Butler will face No. 2 seed Mt. Lebanon in the quarterfinals today.
