Seneca Valley, North Allegheny and Shaler survived the brutal Section 1-AAAA schedule and advanced to the WPIAL playoffs. Butler and Pine-Richland were not as lucky.

Section 1-AAAA is one of the toughest in the WPIAL, as evidenced by the fact that the Golden Tornado and Rams were left on the outside looking in. The Raiders won the section title and should get a favorable seed for the postseason, which is scheduled to begin early next week.

"It's very tough making the playoffs out of this section, and getting through is an accomplishment," North Allegheny coach Andy Maddix said.

Mars won the Section 4-AAA title, and rivals Hampton and Knoch also qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs out of the section.

"We want to make some noise in the playoffs," Planets coach Brian Hobaugh said.

Deer Lakes (out of Section 3-AA) and Shady Side Academy (the Section 4-AA champions) are teams from the North area who clinched Class AA playoff berths.

All of the local teams in Section 4-A are still alive for the Class A playoffs. Vincentian, Springdale and Avonworth have clinched spots, and North Catholic can get in if it beats Vincentian in the regular-season finale Wednesday.
