Written by Chris Adamski on .

Jonathan Perkins and Troy Abbott fell one match short of playing for the WPIAL Class AAA doubles tournament title last season. A year later, the Seneca Valley duo is the favorite to win it all.

Perkins, a sophomore, and Abbott, a senior, are the No. 1 seed in the event that begins 1 p.m. today at Shady Side Academy. The Section 2-AAA champions, Perkins and Abbott have a bye into the quarterfinals. The first three rounds are scheduled for today with the championship and consolation matches 2:30 p.m. Friday. The two finalists automatically qualify for the PIAA tournament later this month.

In Class AA, the top three finishers will head to Hershey. The first three rounds of that classification's tournament are today at North Allegheny, with the final and third-place match Friday at Shady Side Academy. Sewickley Academy's Will Kleeman and Patrick Dellinger are the No. 1 seed in Class AA. Charlie Wilson and Garrett Powell of Quaker Valley also advanced to the Section 3-AA semifinals and will take part in the Class AA doubles tournament.

Other North-area players taking part in the Class AAA tournament include Alok Ningaonkar and Chris Grubbs of Shady Side Academy, Zac McCafferty and A.J. May of Butler, Kevin Both and Chris Lippiello of North Allegheny and Ben Short and Dylan McCullough of Fox Chapel.
