Softball: Spots Town North Preview
The Shaler Titans are the team to beat in Class AAAA with the senior pitcher-catcher combination of Lauren Hackett and Sydney Smyers.
Hackett batted .604 last season with six home runs and Smyers went 16-2, with her only losses coming against eventual WPIAL champions Yough. Junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Maddie Mulig also returns for Shaler a season after scoring 20 runs.
Shaler is the top ranked team in the Post-Gazette preseason rankings, just ahead of section rival, No. 3 Seneca Valley who will be led by senior pitcher Emily Watson (13-5, 1.81 ERA). Watson is a returning Post-Gazette North Zone all-star.
After an uncharacteristic 6-7 season that featured a first-round playoff exit, Vincentian should return as a top contender in Class A. The Royals will rely on two members from the first family of Vincentian athletics, the Melvins. Senior Bridget Melvin batted over .400 last season and her younger sister, junior Danielle Melvin will pitch.
