Yesterday, the WPIAL individual track and field championships got underway with qualifying meets. East athlete qualifiers were held at various sites for Class AAA and Class AA.

Who’s in: Hempfield girls’ and boys’ teams, Gateway boys

Notes:

Both Hempfield teams won championships in 2012 and will be looking to defend. For the Hempfield boys, tomorrow will be a test to see if the Spartans can earn a third straight district championship.

Gateway teams lost in the 2012 semifinals to North Allegheny. But this year, the boys advanced off of West Mifflin’s bracket.

Class AA

Who’s in: Nobody from Sports Town. But the girls form Southmoreland, an “Around the East” team, will be competing.

Here are some games to keep an eye on this week in the East area. (Records are through Sunday)

Tuesday – West Shamokin (2-12) at Burrell (5-8), 4 p.m.: A playoff spot might be on the line for Burrell (5-5), which entered Monday’s play just behind Ford City (6-5) for third place in Class AA Section 3. Burrell hosted Apollo-Ridge (5-6) on Monday. Burrell is the heavy favorite to beat West Shamokin. Not only are the Bucs the home team, but they also blew out West Shamokin, 19-1, earlier this season.
