Penn Trafford, Franklin Regional and Gateway are the top three boys’ teams in the East Zone this season. The Warriors took fifth place last season in the WPIAL team standings ahead of sixth-place Mt. Lebanon and seventh-place Gateway.

Penn Trafford was decimated by graduation including losing North Carolina State recruit Christian McCurdy. Matthew Baurle and Alex Plimpton also graduated from a Penn Trafford team who finished in the team standings at WPIALs.

Franklin Regional’s top swimmers are sophomore Austin Mortimer and senior Dale Maholage while Gateway will be led by junior Alex Caprara, a sixth-place finisher in the 200 individual medley and fourth-place finisher in the 100 breaststroke last season, junior Jake Beley, a PIAA qualifier in the 100 butterfly last season and senior Andrew Nosbisch a three-time PIAA qualifier.

Individually Penn Hills senior Gabriel Larson is one of the top swimmers in the area. He is a three-time PIAA qualifier and he finished in second last season at WPIALs in the 100 breaststroke.

In Class AA Greensburg Central Catholic sophomore Brian Uhrin returns after qualifying for the PIAA championships as a freshman. Greensburg Salem senior Daniel Yu finished fourth in the 100 freestyle a year ago.
