The Bears placed third in WPIAL Class AA for the second consecutive season, qualifying for the PIAA tournament that begins today across the state in both classifications. Winchester Thurston opens up at noon against District 10 champion Warren at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie.

"We're looking forward to the challenge that presents itself in the District 10 champion," Bears first singles player Gabe Isaacson said. "But we hope we can make the WPIAL proud with a win on Tuesday.

Winners of first-round matches in Class AA and Class AAA advance to Hershey, where the quarterfinals will be held Friday. The semifinals and finals are Saturday at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Last season, Winchester Thurston lost in the first round to District 10 champion Fairview. Allderdice lost in the first round of the Class AAA draw to Shady Side Academy.

This season, the Dragons -- again the City League champions -- will play WPIAL Class AAA runner-up Mt. Lebanon in the first round. The match begins at 1 p.m. at the Lakevue Racquet Club in Middlesex Township.

"We obviously know they have a very good team -- but we have a very good team, as well," Allderdice coach Keith Goldman said. "They're a very strong team top-to-bottom, so we're hoping we can pull out at least three wins and move on."
