Winchester Thurston, Central Catholic advance in boys tennis playoffs
The only two teams in the WPIAL postseason that are from schools located within the borders of the city of Pittsburgh easily won first-round tournament matches Monday.
Central Catholic beat Kiski Area, 5-0, in a Class AAA first-round match and Winchester Thurston defeated Washington, 5-0, in a Class AA first-round match. The Vikings will meet North Allegheny 3:30 p.m. today in the Class AAA quarterfinals, while the Bears will play at Section 5-AA champion Bishop Canevin in a Class AA quarterfinal.
The East area's other WPIAL playoff teams all lost Monday. Greensburg Salem (3-2 to Indiana) and Burrell (5-0 to Hampton) lost Class AA matches and Penn-Trafford (4-1 to Bethel Park) and Latrobe (4-1 to Fox Chapel) joined Kiski Area as first-round losers from the East in Class AAA.
First singles player Chad Kissell won the only point for Latrobe.
