Boys Tennis: East WPIAL Team Tournament preview
Penn-Trafford, Central Catholic and Greensburg Salem each will host first-round matches in WPIAL team tennis tournaments that begin today.
The Section 1-AAA champion Warriors are the No. 8 seed and play Bethel Park in the Class AAA bracket. Also in that classification, Central Catholic hosts Kiski Area. Greensburg Salem earned the No. 8 seed in Class AA and will play Indiana.
All first-round matches in both tournaments are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. unless noted.
"We're happy with our playoff seeding; we can't wait," Greensburg Salem coach Rich Lewis said. "We've got a good playoff run in us."
One other team from the East area, Latrobe, qualified for the Class AAA tournament. The Wildcats will play at Fox Chapel in one of the better first-round matches today.
Quarterfinals in both classifications are scheduled for Tuesday and semifinals Wednesday with the finals and consolation matches Thursday. The two finalists in Class AAA and the top three finishers in Class AA qualify for the PIAA tournament later this month in Hershey.
Winchester Thurston emerged from the brutal Section 3-AA and is thought to have a chance to be a PIAA qualifier. The Bears host Washington in a first-round match. The second-place team from Section 3-AA, Hampton, hosts No. 15 seed Burrell in the first round.
