Norwin tops Central, 7-2

Marc Swankler had a hat trick and Scott Cromling made 34 saves to lead Norwin to a 7-2 victory against Central Catholic in a PIHL Class AAA Penguins Cup first-round game Tuesday night at Center Ice Arena in Delmont.

Tim Palmer added two goals and an assist and Kevin Saska three assists for the host Knights (12-9-2), who had lost six of their previous eight.

Swankler, Palmer and Dan Merz scored 3:40 apart within the first 7:48 of the game, and No. 8 seed Norwin never looked back -- despite being outshot, 36-25.

Kevin Kline and Christopher McCambridge scored for the No. 9 Vikings (11-10-2), the Section 3 champions who had closed out the regular season on a 5-2-1 run.



Central Catholic beat Norwin, 4-3, in overtime 18 days earlier.

Other Class AAA first round
• State College 5, Upper St. Clair 2: Dalton Bown and Daniel Moscone each had two goals and two assists as the No. 10 Little Lions (12-10-1) pulled a mild upset in beating the defending state champion Panthers (11-10-2) at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.

Upper St. Clair's Jacob Puccetti and David Penkrot scored 64 seconds apart less than three minutes into the game as the No. 7 seed Panthers built a 2-0 lead. But State College would score the final five goals of the contest.

Mac Ross made 17 saves as the Little Lions held a 33-19 edge in shots and snapped Upper St. Clair's three-game winning streak.

Class A first round
• Thomas Jefferson 9, South Fayette 1: Robert Deliman, Kyle Miller and Nicholas Tamburi each scored twice as the No. 9 seed Jaguars (7-13) cruised to a win against the No. 8 Lions (8-11-1) at Bladerunners Bethel Park.

Thomas Kimmic scored 4:32 in, the first of eight consecutive Thomas Jefferson goals to start the game. Miller added two assists and Zac Uhlyar had a goal and three assists for the Jaguars, who have won four of their past six. Thomas Jefferson goalie Anthony Piccioni stopped 22 of 23 shots.
