Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

Over the next couple of weeks in the City League, we’ll take certain days to examine a particular sport and tell you how its season is handled in PIAA District VIII. Today’s sport: girls’ basketball.

City League teams: Carrick, Obama, Perry, Westinghouse, Allderdice, Brashear

First legal practice date: Nov. 16, 2012

First City League games:  Jan. 4, 2013

City League Championship: Feb. 23, 2013

In 2012, Allderdice won both the girls’ and boys’ Class AAAA titles, whereas Westinghouse’s teams both earned their ways into the PIAA tournament as 1-seeds on the Class AAA brackets.

Obama Academy’s girls’ team earned a No.2-seed in the Class AAAA tournament and lost to Upper St. Clair in the preliminary round.

The City League did not enter a No.2-seed in the preliminary round of the Class AAA tournament; Elizabeth Forward advanced from District VII with a bye.

The Allderdice girls’ team got defeated by Baldwin in a first round game. Westinghouse lost to Chartiers Valley in the Class AAA first round.

As you know, the City League has changed this year because of 2012's Langley/Oliver closures. Likewise, please click here for a link to PIAA information regarding maximum numbers of entries into state tournaments.
